Alladin's Morning Coffee Musings #7 - 2014, A Year in Review

It's been a while since I've updated, though I have been meaning to for a while now. In fact, I have various bits of half-typed posts littered about, that I will hopefully get to publishing. This is the first!

Now that the craziness of the holidays are behind us, I have finally found some time to get back on here and do some updating.  The last few weeks have been predominantly hobby-free, unfortunately. Part of it has to do with all the family stuff that goes on this time of year, and part of it with my newly rekindled obsession with comic books. Without getting into too much detail, I dug out my old books & read them again for the first time in 15-20 years, then re-bagged them in nicer bags for future display in my office/hobby space. I should have stopped there, but then I went out and started buying all sorts of new issues and back issues of old series I never completed. The good news is that I have basically scoured all the local comic stores for back issues, and can stop obsessing over it for a bit and get back to the tabletop gaming side of things.

Better than Death of Superman
One of my favourite series!

From the painting side of things, I don't have much to show yet. I will, however, carve out a few sessions next week and try to push myself to complete my 5 Grey Knights and move onto my next batch. I am really *really* wanting to get them all painted up this year so I can move on.

That said, I didn't completely ignore my the hobby side of things, as I did assemble my 3rd box of Grey Knights (short of a magnetized backpack or two, and all of the extra bits) and, more importantly, I actually played my first tabletop game!

Yes, it happened. I am no-longer a 40k Virgin. The owner of my FLGS set me up with another new player, and we ended up throwing down on the 30th of December. It came down to the wire, but at least I can honestly say I completed that New Years Resolution! I will be posting the battle report up shortly. It's lame, but I learnt a lot!

Speaking of Resolutions, lets look back at my list I put out in the beginning of 2014:
  1. Play your first game. Any game.  - Success!
  2. Stop wanting to buy every new shiny thing that comes out.  - I will call this a success, but it was close. I didn't blow my hobby budget, but I did buy a few small things I didn't actually need this year.
  3. Be more dedicated to completing your painting/modelling goals.  - I clearly dropped the ball on this one. Out of my entire list that is hanging out on the side of this blog, I completed one bloody thing, making a lightbox. I do feel really bummed about this, and I hope that 2015 will be a much more productive year for me. I am optimistic!
  4. See 2). Seriously!  - Clearly a joke, but what wasn't on this list was me signing up to be part of a blog-roll, and that was accomplished early in 2014.
  5. Fail miserably at 2) by purchasing the new Tyranid Codex + enough to have a 1500pt starter army.  - Really kind of a stupid resolution, considering #2 on my list, but hey, it allowed me to have an army that I can play games with, so will count that as a win.
So, on paper, it looks like a successful year, but really, Resolution #3 was by far the most important one, and I completely dropped the ball there. That said, aside from the holidays, I have been pretty motivated painting-wise the last few months, and I feel confident this will continue into 2015. I hope that next year I will have a lot more of my "to-do" list crossed off.

That about wraps up this post, I will have lots more coming in the next little bit, as I work on my 2015 Resolutions, and get my hobby head-space in order!

  1. Just consider resolution 3 an "ongoing one". Happy new year!

  2. Oh, #3 is THE Resolution for 2015! No more funny business.

Same to you. All the best, and may the WAAAUGH be with you.
