Arena Rex

ARENA REX - Gladiator Combat in a Mythic Age

This Kickstarter campaign (Link here) really piqued my interest for a number of reasons:
  1. Ancient Rome (and Roman entertainment) has always fascinated me
  2. The concept of the Game World, as well as the Concept Art that brought it to life, are quite impressive and engaging
  3. The model showcase thus far has also been excellent - hopefully the remaining models are cast in the same quality
  4. The shorter, skirmish-style gaming would be an easy point-of-entry for any non-gaming friends I want to rope into the hobby
  5. Many more reasons that I can't think of right now... official web page here.

Gladiatorial Arena Terrain Super-Project

While the likelihood of this ever getting finished is about zero percent, I can still dream. The project involves a significant amount of planning, architecture and engineering (on a 35mm scale), construction, sweating, swearing and crying.

My hope is to build an Arena for gaming, semi-inspired by the actual Coliseum of Antiquity. The main features that increase the complexity and scale of the project are as follows:
  • A raised arena floor that encompasses numerous pits, trap-doors, passageways that can be utilized in a modular fashion to create different game scenarios
  • An Arena built primarily using resin blocks made by molds by Hirst Arts. I chose resin because of its relatively lightweight nature.
  • This design choice is further complicated by the fact that I have never used moulds before, and never used resin before either.
  • Also, with the budget for only one of each required mould, and likely needing to make dozens (or hundreds, depending on the final schematic) of copies of each mould to get the requisite amount of blocks, it will be an enormous time-sink
  • The circular/oval nature of the arena does not translate well into Hirst blocks - lots of sanding, dry-fitting and Greenstuff will be required
That being said, it is a challenge that hopefully I will rise to meet.
